Who it is for

Records officers with a queue that keeps growing.

Outside pharma the same problem appears as FOIA and public-records backlogs. Trusano brings the same engine — FOIA redaction software with pharma-grade detection — to whoever has to redact at volume.

Backlogs are a policy failure with a technical fix.

FOIA offices and records teams face rising request volumes with flat headcount, redacting page by page. The result is backlogs measured in years — and every manual pass risks the missed identifier that becomes tomorrow’s headline.

Volume rises, headcount does not

Request loads grow while the records team stays the same size, so the queue only lengthens.

Page-by-page review sets the ceiling

Without redacting software, the manual redaction rate is the throughput limit. Nothing else you change moves the backlog.

One missed identifier is the whole story

Every manual pass carries the risk of the disclosure that becomes tomorrow’s headline.

How our automated document redaction software works

  1. Ingest

Documents at volume — text, tables, scanned images (OCR).

  2. Detect

Personal and confidential information in context, not by keyword.

  3. Transform

Redact, anonymize, or mask per your rules; risk assessment reports generate automatically.

  4. Review & release

Your reviewers approve; the audit trail documents every decision.

FOIA redaction software built for records that end up in court.

Every transformation logged, every decision attributable — automated redaction government agencies can defend on the record. Fully-configurable architecture scales to agency needs. FOIA & Privacy Act expertise behind the software, not just in the brochure.

What is Trusano, and how does it differ from ANONYMIZE?

Trusano is the same patented TrialAssure ANONYMIZE® engine, packaged for records outside clinical research — FOIA and Privacy Act requests, and other regulated disclosure. What changes is the configuration: your record types and your exemption categories in place of clinical document structures. What does not change is the review model, where the system proposes and a person approves every release.

Why the engine transfers

Clinical records are about as unforgiving a training ground as exists for this problem: high volume, high sensitivity, and a regulator on the other end of every release. The engine has run there for 15+ years. Crucially it reads context rather than matching keywords, which is what makes it portable — the same capability that distinguishes a diagnosis in a medical history from the same word in an adverse-event context is what distinguishes a private individual’s name from a public official’s, or a personal mobile number from an agency switchboard.

What it handles

Documents at volume, including text, tables and scanned images through OCR, covering both personal protected data and commercially confidential information. Detection is followed by transformation to your rules, and a risk assessment report is generated automatically rather than assembled by hand after the fact.

Defensible, not just fast

Speed is the visible benefit and the wrong thing to buy on. The reason to automate first-pass detection is that it makes releases consistent and attributable: every transformation logged, every decision traceable to a person, and the reasoning available when a determination is challenged or appealed months later. A fast release you cannot account for is a liability with a shorter queue. Public-sector teams evaluating this against their own workflow should start with government records teams, which covers the FOIA case in full.

Trusano — frequently asked questions

Is Trusano a different product from TrialAssure ANONYMIZE®?

No — Trusano is the same anonymization engine as ANONYMIZE, packaged and configured for records outside pharma: FOIA and Privacy Act requests, legal discovery, and financial, HR and healthcare operations files. Detection, transformation and risk reporting are identical; what changes is the rule sets, terminology and review workflow, configured to how a records office works rather than to a clinical study report. That means the methods arrive market-tested by 15+ years in the most privacy-sensitive industry there is, rather than built new for your queue. The pharma packaging is described on ANONYMIZE.

Which sectors use this redaction software?

Trusano is the automated redaction government and public sector records teams adopt first — FOIA and Privacy Act processing, where request volume rises while headcount stays flat. Beyond that: legal teams running discovery and privilege review, insurance and banking records, and hospital and health system records offices. The common thread is a queue of documents that must be released with personal or confidential information removed, under a policy someone will later be asked to defend. Sector rules are configured rather than custom-built, so the same engine handles a FOIA exemption set and a hospital release policy. Related: legal, privacy and compliance.

Can it work within government security requirements?

Yes — Trusano is cloud based document redaction software that runs as a closed system on Azure, with encryption in transit and at rest, and client data is never shared between customers or used to train public models. TrialAssure is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified by Intertek under UKAS accreditation (certificate 0251375, valid to 18 July 2029) and ISO 9001:2015 certified, and handling is GDPR- and HIPAA-aligned. Trusano is FedRAMP compliant but not FedRAMP Authorized; our hosting runs on Microsoft Azure, which is FedRAMP Authorized. Agency-specific controls and deployment options are worked through during procurement, and the documentation lives in the Trust Center.

How much faster is it, honestly?

Agencies replacing manual passes with redacting software have cut processing backlogs by up to 80%. The words “up to” are doing real work: the gain comes from automating first-pass detection and transformation at volume, so results track your document mix, scan quality, and how much reviewer judgment your release policy demands. Text-heavy, repetitive record sets improve most. Small volumes of unusual, heavily contested documents improve least, because human review rather than detection is the bottleneck there. So rather than promise a figure for your queue, we benchmark on a sample of your own records in a pilot and report measured throughput against your current baseline.

What is the difference between anonymize, redact, and mask?

Redaction, anonymization and masking are three different operations on the same sensitive text: redaction removes it entirely, anonymization alters it so individuals cannot be re-identified, and masking hides it while preserving document structure. Redaction means the information cannot be recovered from the released file. Anonymization alters personal or commercially confidential information — offsetting dates, generalizing values, replacing identifiers — so the record stays useful to read and analyze. Which one applies is a policy decision rather than a technical one: exemption-driven releases usually call for redaction, while data sharing and secondary use favor anonymization. Trusano’s automated document redaction software does all three, under your rules, with every transformation logged.

What file types can Trusano process?

Emails, text documents and spreadsheets, plus scanned images through OCR — covering both personal protected data and commercially confidential information. Detection runs across the document at volume rather than one file at a time.

Does a person still approve every release?

Yes. Trusano’s public records redaction AI proposes and a reviewer disposes: nothing is released on the system’s judgment alone. Every file carries an audit trail, every decision is logged, and the risk assessment report is generated automatically, so the release is defensible on the record rather than only fast.

Can it make Exemption 6 or Exemption 4 judgment calls for us?

No, and it is not meant to. The legal judgment on personal-privacy and confidential-commercial-information calls stays with your officers and counsel. What Trusano removes is the mechanical phase in front of that judgment — the hours spent running a highlighter across thousands of pages looking for names, addresses and identifiers — so reviewers spend their time on the exception documents where context actually matters.
